Assessment Centres - Workforce Retention

Workforce Retention

In a short series of blogs, our Head of Technical Training, John Saysell provides some customer examples of how tailored Assessment and Development Centres can provide a much needed structure when looking to make improvements within your maintenance department. The first blog looks at an example of workforce retention.

How can I retain my maintenance workforce?

A customer was struggling to retain skilled maintenance technicians as there are other companies nearby paying significantly higher wages. Most of the technicians are of very high calibre, having come through the company apprenticeship scheme.

Role creation

The company created a Senior Technician role as part of the structure. To achieve senior technician’s status, the candidate would need to undergo an interview process and a Technical Assessment Centre.

Technical Assessment Centre

The Technical Assessment Centre was developed through discussing the requirements with our team and reviewing the existing assessment material, adding elements where appropriate. The assessments included these key subjects:

  • Safe isolation of 3 phase supply

  • Fault finding using electrical instruments

  • Inverter set up

  • Generic and specific fault finding on a programmable controller

  • Using electrical drawings as a fault-finding aid

  • Robotics theory

  • Mechanical theory

  • Belt or chain tension and alignment

  • Electro-pneumatic fault-finding

  • Building a pneumatic circuit

Certificate of Competence

Successful completion of the Technical Assessment Centre resulted in an MCP Certificate of Competence, a significant pay rise for the technicians. This has led to the improved retention of key staff, the key driver when beginning this process.
