Assessment Centres - Assessing Skills
In a short series of blogs, our Head of Technical Training, John Saysell provides some customer examples of how tailored Assessment and Development Centres can provide a much needed structure when looking to make improvements within your maintenance department. The fourth and final blog looks at an example of assessing skills.
How can I assess the skills of the technicians I recruit?
We carried out a practical maintenance assessment centre for one company about ten years ago. Every time they recruit a new member of staff, we put them through a similar suite of assessments to ensure that the member of staff is competent.
Definition of Competence
The definition of competence that we use at MCP is that staff can do the task:
safely
to the correct standard
within a reasonable length of time
Some customers arrange for us to assess their technicians on an annual basis to ensure their competence remains at a high level.
What does a maintenance development centre involve?
Prior to the maintenance development centre, we would:
Develop new assessments if appropriate or tailor existing material
Advise on communication strategy
Carrying out a maintenance development centre would enable candidates to:
Demonstrate safe working maintenance practices
Provide evidence of competence
What are the benefits?
As an employer, following a maintenance development centre, you would have:
Feedback on skills, knowledge, attitude, behaviour and Health & Safety
Identified skills gaps
Training plans to close skills gaps
Knowledge of generic mechanical and electrical skills levels
Confidence of working with a trusted provider
