Why upskill or multi-skill?

Engineers Reading plans

There is a shortage of skilled maintenance technicians – and it’s getting worse. 29,000 (17.93%) engineering technicians will have retired or be close to retirement by 2026 according to ECITB report written in 2018.

Below are some considerations you may need to think about when it comes to upskilling and multiskilling staff:

  • Evidence of competence – Good competency evidence should demonstrate practically that the competence has been achieved. Competency evidence is not an essay. It should indicate, via the appropriate media and content, what the trainee has done, how they have progressed and any feedback received from colleagues on their competence.

  • Control salary costs – Some studies, such as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), predict that every time a business replaces a salaried employee, it costs 6 to 9 months’ salary on average. For a manager making £40,000 a year, £20,000 to £30,000 in recruiting and training expenses.

  • No induction or onboarding requirements – On average new recruits perform at a lower level for the first 2 years. Why external hires get paid more, and perform worse than internal staff

  • Boost morale – 94% of employees say they will stay at a company longer if they invested in their career development, workplace learning and development report, LinkedIn 2018

  • Access a new pool of diverse talent - Upskilling and reskilling the workforce will be the only option for most companies. So investing in talent development now is bound to pay off in the future.

What is the cost of doing nothing?

Below is a graph that illustrates the perceived costs of training, the actual costs of not doing training and the actual costs of resourcing a reasoned training programme.

The first column represents the cost of training typically seen in the accounts. The second column shows the true costs as it includes the costs of the losses that occur due to inadequate skills. The third column illustrates the costs when a company invests in training programmes that improve the workforce’s skills and lead to better productivity. The total training costs fall as losses due to insufficient skills and recruitment reduce.
