Mind the Gap

Closing the Gaps to Achieve Success

Why a drinks manufacturer decided to assess its technical operators

A few years ago, a large multi-national drinks company embarked on a training programme to enable their operators to carry out basic maintenance tasks. Fast forward to the present day and the reality is that the technical operators are not actually using the skills that the training was designed to deliver.

But why not?

We don’t know if it was lack of a vision, resource, skills, action plan, commitment or measurement that caused the programme to fail. What we do know is that something needed to change. So, in came MCP Technical Training! We recently completed the design for a bespoke Development Centre to assess the operators’ existing skills and knowledge, and recommend training to close the skills gaps left behind by previous training.

Skills Gaps - Holistic Approach

Adopting an holistic approach to close the gaps.

The bespoke Develop Centre assessments included:

·       Health and safety

·       Belt or chain alignment and tensioning

·       Strip and rebuild a pump

·       Build a pneumatic circuit

·       Electrical isolation

·       Electrical fault-finding

·       Fault finding on sensors

·       Mechanical and electrical theory

In addition to technical operator training and assessment, we also offer support for the process which may include:

·       Input to technical operator steering committee

·       Train the work-based trainer to help technicians or technical operators to develop and deliver their own training on their own equipment and processes

·       Assessor training to ensure that the staff trained by MCP and your own trainers are competent

·       Sending MCP assessors to site to carry on-job skills assessment on your technical operators

·       Advice on a vision, resources, skills, an action plan, commitment or measurements to support the process

It’s a common problem

The above is an all too familiar story. If your operator development programme has also not borne the fruit you would have hoped for, please get in touch to find out how we can give it a renewed lease of life!
